SPRING CITY, TN – Josh Collins of Knoxville, TN beat the rain and won the 25-lap Late Model Feature Race at Mountain View Raceway driving the Knoxville Diesel Rocket. While Collins had the field covered leading all 25 laps, the action behind him was fast and furious. Rain arrived just after the Late Model race and the rest of the Divisions will run Double Features on July 2.
Colton Profitt of Crossville, TN finished second in the Wyatt Builders Capital Race Car, and third went to Addison Cardwell of Knoxville, TN driving the Jake Miller Excavating Longhorn. The defending and three-time Track Champion Barry Goodman of Spring City, TN drove his Charlie’s Used Auto Parts CVR with a Marion Tipton Throwback wrap to a fourth-place finish.
Jeff Jackson of Ooltewah, TN rounded out the top five in the Jackson Racing Longhorn. In preliminary action, Collins out-timed the 20-car field in Qualifications with a lap around the ¼-mile high-banked clay oval in 11.850 seconds to earn the pole position for the Main Event.
Collins took the lead at the start of the race followed by Profitt and Goodman. The first of three caution flags came out on lap five when Jeremy Thurman of Rockwood, TN spun the Thurman Racing TNT in turn one. Collins led Profitt, Goodman, Jackson, and Cardwell down for the restart, and Cardwell got by Jackson to take over the fourth spot.
Thurman brought out the second caution flag with his second spin of the race in turn one on lap nine. When Collins brought Profitt, Goodman, Cardwell and Jackson down for the restart, a side-by-battle for the third spot ensued between Goodman and Cardwell.
Cardwell stepped to the outside groove and sailed around Goodman to take over the third spot coming off the fourth turn on lap 12. Goodman stayed right on Cardwell’s back bumper and was looking inside, as Cardwell found a fast groove on the high side. On lap 16, Goodman used the torque of his Chevrolet Performance CT 525 to drive under Cardwell coming off the second turn.
The final caution flag of the race came out on lap 18 when Joey Bishop of Spring City, TN stalled the Bishop Racing Special in turn two. When the field went back to green flag action on the restart, Goodman and Cardwell resumed their battle for the third spot. Cardwell once again went to the top shelf to challenge Goodman, but Goodman was able to hang on to the spot.
Cardwell dropped back to reload and take another shot at Goodman in the closing laps of the race. Goodman covered the bottom groove and Cardwell went where Goodman wasn’t. On lap 21, Cardwell sailed around the outside of Goodman to take over the third spot, a position he held on to until the checkered flag. Collins carried a .829 second margin of victory over Profitt.
