GOODMAN POCKETS $2,500 WITH ROCKY TOP RUMBLE WIN AT MOUNTAIN VIEW

SPRING CITY, TN – The defending and three-time Mountain View Raceway Late Model Champion Barry Goodman of Spring City, TN took the lead just past the halfway point and drove the Charlie’s Used Auto Parts CVR to a $2,500 victory Saturday night in the 40-lap 3rd Annual Rocky Top Rumble.

Goodman’s first win of the 2022 season at Mountain View Raceway was powered by the economical all-aluminum Chevrolet Performance CT525 Circle Track Engine. The race saw three different leaders with several side-by-side battles on the ¼-mile high-banked clay oval.

Addison Cardwell of Knoxville, TN finished second in the Cardwell Racing Special and Josh Walker of Ringgold, GA took the third spot driving the Nichols Fiberglass Mastersbilt. Jesse Lowe of Crossville, TN rallied from the tenth starting position to finish fourth in the Lowe Racing Special and was the Hard Charger of the Race.

John Ownbey of Cleveland, TN was fifth in the Orr Brothers Construction Kryptonite and Chad Wallace started 11th and finished sixth in the Nelson Lawn Care Special. Ryan Tims of Georgetown, TN drove the VEGA Corporation Longhorn to a seventh-place finish and Justin Cameron of Harrison, TN took the eighth spot in the Cameron Racing Special.

Ruben Mayfield of Lenoir City, TN recovered from a mid-race spin to finish ninth in the RM Trucking Stinger and Chris Lewis of Lenoir City, TN rounded out the top ten in the Century 21 Rocket. The two ten-lap B-Main Races were won by Ownbey and Mayfield. Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN was the fast qualifier with a lap in 10.761 seconds and the Fast Car Dash was won by Cardwell.

At the start of the race, Cardwell took the lead in turn one followed by Kyle Courtney of Knoxville, TN in the Courtney Racing Special, Goodman, Walker, and Mayfield, Brian Selby of Sparta, TN in the PPM CVR brought out the first of seven caution flags with a spin in turn two. Courtney drove by Cardwell on the restart to take the lead.

While Courtney pulled away from Cardwell, Goodman put the pressure on to challenge for second, Goodman powered around Cardwell for the second spot on lap three, as a debris caution slowed the field on lap four. On the restart, Goodman challenged Courtney for the lead with an inside move in turn one, but Courtney was able to stay on the point coming off the high side of turn two.

Ownbey moved into the top five on lap five, and the third caution flag of the race came out on lap 11 when Adam Bishop of Riceville, TN stalled his Williamson Concrete & Construction Pierce in turn two. Courtney once again pulled away from Goodman on the restart, and caught the cars on the tail end of the lead lap on lap 18. Ownbey passed Walker for the fourth spot on lap 20.

The lead changed on lap 22 after Mayfield spun in turn two. During the caution period, Courtney gave up the lead and pulled to the pit area with a mechanical issue. Courtney was the tough luck driver of the race after putting on a show for the fans.

Courtney put a show on for the fans by showcasing his talent with a fast hot rod. He was the second quick qualifier and started fifth in the Fast Car Dash. Instead of loading up, Courtney finished third to start the big show from the inside of the second row. In the Main Event, Courtney rallied to race his way to the lead by the third lap.

Goodman took over the lead for the restart that saw Walker pass Ownbey for the third spot. Lowe moved up to battle Ownbey side-by-side for the fourth spot. Joe Bray of New Tazewell, TN stalled the Bray Roofing Rocket in turn four to light up the yellow caution bulb for the fifth time. Goodman brought the field back to green for the restart, and business picked up at the front of the field.

Cardwell and Walker battled for second, while Ownbey and Lowe contested the fourth spot. The field was slowed two more times when Carden Cochran of Ringgold, GA stalled the Cochran Racing Special in turn two, and a caution for debris on lap 34.

The seven-lap dash to the checkered flag saw Goodman stay in the lead and take a .650 second margin of victory over Cardwell who edged Walker for the second spot, and Lowe finished fourth with Ownbey rounding out the top five.

A total of 90 cars in five Divisions were in the Mountain View Raceway Pit Area on Saturday night. Cardwell had a good night, as he won the 20-lap Sportsman Feature Race followed by Lowe, and Brandon Stanfield of Soddy Daisy, TN in the Backyard Race Engines Mastersbilt.
