SPRING CITY, TN – The defending Champion Barry Goodman of Spring City, TN must have not shaved on Saturday night, as he won the 25-lap Late Model Feature Race at Mountain View Raceway by a whisker driving the Charlie’s Used Auto Parts CVR. Goodman padded his lead in the point standings with his third win of the season.
Goodman and Ruben Mayfield of Lenoir City, TN battled side-by-side for the lead on the last lap of the race after a caution flag. Mayfield drove under Goodman in turns one and two to take the lead. Mayfield and Goodman raced side-by-side down the backstretch, but Goodman got a run on the outside coming off the fourth turn and beat Mayfield back to the checkered flag by inches.
Goodman’s margin of victory at the checkered flag was .093 seconds. Mayfield had to settled second in the RM Trucking Stinger, and Michael Smith of Crossville, TN finished third in the Spin City Studio Longhorn. Michael Evans of Chattanooga, TN was fourth driving the Evans Racing Special. Brian Selby of Sparta, TN rounded out the top five in the Selby Racing Special.
In preliminary action, Goodman was also the fast qualifier among the 16 entrants with a lap around the ¼-mile high-banked clay oval in 11.072 seconds to earn the pole position for the 25-lap Main Event. Goodman took the lead at the start of the race followed by Smith, Jordan Rodabaugh of Soddy Daisy, TN in the Orr Brothers Construction Kryptonite, Mayfield and Selby.
Mayfield dropped back to the sixth spot, as Selby moved up to fourth on lap three, and Tim Ladd of Clinton, TN took over the fifth spot on the fourth lap. Mayfield regained the fifth position on lap five, getting by Ladd in the Ladd Racing Special.
The first of six caution flags came out on lap six when Shannon Elrod of Baxter, TN spun the Elrod Racing Rocket in turn four. Goodman led Smith, Rodabaugh, Selby and Mayfield down for the restart. After two more restarts, Mayfield got busy and passed Selby for the fourth spot after a lap nine restart.
By lap 13, Mayfield got the inside line on Rodabaugh, and they raced side-by-side for two laps before Mayfield claimed the third position off the fourth turn on lap 15. Ladd spun in turn four on lap 21 to bring out the fourth caution flag. During the caution period, Rodabaugh broke a brake line and dumped brake fluid around most of the race track.
When the green light signaled the field back to racing, Mayfield powered under Smith to take over the second spot. With Goodman solidly in the lead, he took the white flag to signal one lap to go, but that was replaced with the caution flag when Mike Bishop of Decatur, TN stalled his Bishop Racing Special in turn two.
That set up a one-lap dash to the finish, and the green and white flags were displayed simultaneously. Mayfield drove up inside Goodman in turn one and two leaders made contact. Goodman kept the fire lit in his dayglo orange, yellow and blue machine and stayed alongside Mayfield down the backstretch. Goodman got a better run off the fourth turn to get to the finish line first.
