SPRING CITY, TN – Brandon Miller of Maryville, TN won a wild 25-lap Late Model Feature Race driving the Maryville Nutrition CVR Saturday night at Mountain View Raceway. Miller held off two-time Track Champion Barry Goodman in a side-by-side duel, and survived a wild crash with a lapped car to post his second win of the season at Mountain View Raceway.
Tim Ladd of Clinton, TN made a late-race charge to finish second in the Ladd Racing Special. Goodman took the third spot in the Charlie’s Used Auto Parts CVR to all but clinch his third straight Mountain View Raceway Late Model Championship.
Shannon Elrod of Baxter, TN drove the Elrod Racing Rocket to a fourth-place finish and Glenn Vanover of Harriman, TN rounded out the top five in the Vanover Concrete Finishing Longhorn. Miller was the fast qualifier among the 20 entrants with a lap around the ¼-mile high-banked clay oval in 10.913 seconds.
Taylor took the lead at the drop of the green flag followed by Goodman, Ladd, Tim Taylor of Science Hill, KY in the Taylor Trucking Black Diamond and Elrod. The third lap saw Elrod pass Taylor for the fourth spot, but the action was slowed on lap five when Jeremy Thurman of Rockwood, TN spun the Integrity Auto Sales Warrior in turn two and again on lap six.
Goodman and Miller raced side-by-side for the lead, and while Miller will be recorded as leading all 25 laps of the race, he and Goodman swapped the several times in the first half of the race. By the halfway point of the race, the lead duo began to encounter lapped traffic, as they both made spectacular moves to remain door-to-door.
On lap 17, the lapped Hicks Motorsports Warrior driven by Randall Hicks of Cleveland, TN found himself in the eye of the storm that was the lead battle. Coming off the fourth turn, Hicks was tagged by Miller, and Hicks got sideways in front of Goodman. The nose of Goodman’s car got under the driver’s door of Hick’s car and launched into a wild flip under the flagstand.
The red flag was displayed, and Hick’s race car came to rest on its left side. Hick was uninjured and walked away from the accident. Miller led Goodman, Ladd, Elrod and Vanover down for the restart. Miller pulled away and Ladd got by a fading Goodman for the second spot on lap 22. By that time, Miller enjoyed over a two second lead and took a 2.655 second margin of victory under the checkered flag.
