PALMER POWERS TO MOUNTAIN VIEW RACEWAY OPEN-WHEEL MOD WIN


SPRING CITY, TN – The defending Mountain View Raceway Open-Wheel Modified Champion Billy Palmer of Knoxville, TN drove the Mighty Muffler and Brakes Special to victory in the 20-lap Feature Race Saturday night. The 71-year-old East Tennessee legend took the lead on a lap three restart, and then held off Joe Freels of Coalfield, TN for the win.


Freels finished second in the Coalhill Fabrication Special, and Kyle Shadden of Dayton, TN took the third spot driving the Suttle’s Dirtworx. Scott Iles of Evensville, TN was fourth in the Construction Unlimited Lightning and Walter Walsh of Claxton, TN rounded out the top five driving the Walsh Racing Special.


Scott Shelton of Sparta, TN driving the Shelton Racing Special took the lead at the start of the race followed by Palmer, Freels, Walsh, and Shadden. David Lester of Rockwood, TN brought out the first of three caution flags when he spun the Cadillac Grill Special in turn three. That set up a restart with Palmer getting along side Shelton in turn one to battle for the lead.


Palmer drove around Shelton coming off the second turn, as Shelton tagged the wall on the backstretch and stopped in turn three to light up the yellow caution bulb for the second time. On the next restart, Palmer had Freels just a couple of car lengths behind him with Walsh in the third spot.


Walsh spun out of the third position in turn three on lap ten. Palmer led Freels, Shadden, Iles, and Larry James of Newport, TN in the James Racing Special for the restart. The second half of the race went clean and green to the checkered flag with Palmer taking a 3.709 second margin of victory under Wayne Brock’s twin checkered flags.


With 91 race cars in seven Divisions on Saturday night at Mountain View Raceway, there were eight Feature Races in a show that took an efficient four and a half hours to complete. The Mountain Raceway Officials had the final checkered flag of the evening falling at 11:15 p.m.


Kyle Courtney of Knoxville, TN won the 25-lap Late Model Feature Race in the Orr Brothers Construction Kryptonite, a race car that knows how to get to Victory Lane at Mountain View Raceway. John Ownbey of Cleveland, TN drove the car to four wins at Mountain View during the 2021 racing season.


The defending and three-time Mountain View Raceway Late Model Champion Barry Goodman of Spring City, TN finished second in the Charlie’s Used Auto Parts CVR and Zach Shannon of Wartburg, TN was third in the Shannon & Sons Trucking Rocket. Addison Cardwell of Knoxville, TN took the fourth spot driving the Cardwell Racing Special and Kelby Norwood of Etowah, TN rounded out the top five in the Exit Real Estate Rocket.


Joe Bray of New Tazewell, TN, the defending Mountain View Raceway Sportsman Champion, won the 20-lap Sportsman Main Event driving the Bray Roofing Rocket. Brandon Stanfield of Soddy Daisy, TN finished second in the Frizzell Excavating Mastersbilt and Addison Cardwell drove the Cardwell Racing Rocket to a third-place showing.


Casey Cash of Spring City, TN was the Thunder 15-lap Feature Race winner in the Duncan Family Camaro followed by Scott Smith of Soddy Daisy, TN driving the Smith Racing Special and Chase Hoffman of Dayton, TN in the Buck’s Race Shop and Repair Dodge.


The 31-car Front-Wheel-Drive field was divided up into two Feature Races. The 15-lap A Feature Race was won by Nathan Adams of Crossville, TN in the Adams Racing Special with Josh Scealf of Decatur, TN taking second driving the J&S Towing Honda, and Jacob Sharp of Crossville, TN drove the Sharp Race Cars Chevrolet to a third-place finish.


Jon Pilkey of Ten Mile, TN won the 12-lap Front-Wheel-Drive B Feature Race driving the Pilkey Racing Saturn. Marcus Smith of Spring City, TN was second in the Southern Auto Body Supply Honda and Robert Creasman of Dayton, TN finished third in the Creasman Racing Dodge.


Chevy Adams of Crossville, TN in the Adams Racing Special won the 10-lap Junior Front-Wheel-Drive Main Event for kids 15 years of age and younger. Second and third spots went to Rebeacca Gresham of Decatur, TN driving the Gresham Racing Chevrolet and Frankie Sharp of Crossville, TN in the Sharp Race Cars Chevrolet.


Charlie Fisher of Spring City, TN drove the Charlie’s Used Auto Parts GRT to victory in the 15-lap Developmental Sportsman Main Event. Bradley Scarbrow of Crossville, TN finished second in the Scarbrow Racing Special, and Johnny Vanover of Harriman, TN was third driving the Vanover Racing Special.


The next event at Mountain View Raceway will be Saturday night, May 7 with a Regular Weekly Points Race for the Late Model, Sportsman, Open-Wheel Modified, B-Hobby, Thunder, Front-Wheel-Drive, Junior Front-Wheel-Drive, and Developmental Sportsman Divisions in action on the ¼-mile high-banked clay oval.


The Pit Gate opens at 3 p.m. and the Grandstand and Tier Parking Gates open at 4 p.m. Pre-Race Registration and Technical Inspection will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Drivers Meeting is set for 6:15 p.m. and Hot Laps are scheduled for 6:45 p.m.


Pit Passes are $25 for Adults, $15 for Children 6-11, and Children 5 and under are admitted Free. The General Admission and Tier Parking ticket prices are $10 for race fans 12 and older, Children 6-11 are $5. and Children 5 and under are admitted Free. All Children must be accompanied by an Adult.
